Hello i don't know if any of you will find this intresting at all but i thought i'd give it a whirl, i just invested in a Hand held digital thermometer, used in kitchens to test cooked foods and frozen foods, it's a digtail display hand help device with a probe attached and i have found it most usefull in finding out my chameleons basking spot temp and his ambient temp in his viv, when i 1st tested his basking spot it was running well below par and with the aid of this device i have now got his spot bang on the temp he needs after a few adjustments of course. I bought the whole kit for £45 but you can pick them up as little as £30 so if you want to test your pride and joys basking spot to make sure there getting there desired heat and to test the rest of the vivs exact temp because they are very very precise at what they do then maybe this will be usefull to you as well as it was me, if this post is just a load of rubbish i'm sorry for taking up the space lol ;D Animal

It's a very good technique. Thank you for sharing with us Animal. I'm sure we will be using that idea soon to make sure our pets are happy in their specific temperatures.

It's good idea and I've tried this before and the key is - to get a good quality one!! I've had both a hand held and a standard digital thermometer with a probe and the standard one was complete s**t!! so if anyone is even thinking about going there don't bother really!!
as for the hand held, thats what i was doing for a while and mine cost £50. Then again if you just want something reliable and that tells the **correct** temp then you can't go wrong with the exo terra thermometers. but for something more specific like you animal, u really hit the nail on the head!! so thanks for sharing!!

Best thermometer out there at the moment is the infared temp gun ... best thing since sliced bread. Mine is something like this but either mine is much much smaller or the child holding it has got very small hands www.livefoods.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=542
