Hello i just wanted to know what you all think about breeding your own mice/rats for/as your reps food (i don't mean live feeding, just in case you thought i did) and how do you think/would you kill them?
I buy all my reps food from my mates rep shop but i was just wondering what everyone else thinks about breeding and killing your own?
Would you or wouldn't you?
Thanks Sam x

i think its great as you know the food is fresh and the food you are feeding it is good quality so in turn good for the snakes but still would buy a large majority from petshop/online due to price but is good way to get fussy snakes going with a fresh warm meal there are many ways to euthanise an animal..CO2 is very effective and very humane

I use my own mice and rats, I prefer it for the reasons stated above I have seen a snake nearly die from a bad mouse and I never want to witness anything like that again so I prefer to grow my own, they are a breeding group of mice who will stay with me until they die of natural causes I only reap the babies, or if I grow them on the grown on ones. I have a hard time doing it especially with the rats, but my one royal is very picky and he will only eat homebred rats so this is just one of those things it's either do it or let him starve because he's picky. I use a Co2 chamber made by a friend, it's very good and quick and looks to be painless enough for the mice etc. not ideal and my mom calls me the mouse murderer lol but my snakes have to eat and the food they get from the shop will probably have been clonked on the head anyway by a much less sensitive person than me so I know my way is good all round.

Showing my ignorance once again, why can't you give them live food?

We are not allowed to give them live food, its against the law in the UK, and if the snake has never seen live food before, it would be very confused and the snake would prob get attacked, and a scared mouse can do alot of damage to a snake.

Wow. It makes a lot of sense, I know rats etc have powerful jaws and if they can run around the side of the snake they can do a lot of damage!

C02 is a mix of two shop bought substances, the rodent reeper I use can be found on www.livefood.co.uk and I think there is a diagram of how to make them on there too, I don't wanna say too much cuz I can see someone blowing themselves up and blaming me but yeah check on that site in feeder forum and you will see it all explained.

You could always bop them over the head... if you prefer that method. Personally I'd prefer the C02 because it's just like them going to sleep. Same as putting a dog down, except it's with gas instead of an injection. It's more humane.

I've heard of many methods used such as hitting them on the head or drowning them. Euthanising them is probably the most humane way that you could do it.

We tried breeding our own when I was a child but it didn't go down to well. My dad did get an account with a pet market trader in Cardiff who sold us live mice cheep in bulk. Then (not knowing better) we used to suffocate them in an air tight container, my dad used to say that was the recommended way as stated by the RSPCA, I'm not sure if that was true!
I haven't got enough time to breed my own but if I could by them alive at a decent price I would happily kill them myself by banging them on the head or suffocating them. I don't seem to have the stomache for feeding live anymore, I think it's cruel (says the man who used to stick them in an airtight container)!!! and unecessary.
When you drop a mouse into a tank with no escape and a predator staring at it to me that is just torture. in the wild the mouse or prey wouldn't even know about it until the last minute!
Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age!
